New Year’s Reflections
As a new year starts and an old one ends,
We contemplate what brought us joy,
And we think of our loved ones and our friends.
Recalling all the happy times,
Remembering how they enriched our lives,
We reflect upon who really counts,
As the fresh and bright new year arrives.
And when I/we ponder those who do,
I/we immediately think of you.
Thanks for being one of the reasons I'll/We'll have a Happy New Year!

It's Christmas Time Again!
Run your troubles off the track,
Throw your worries out the window
Get the monkeys off your back.
Silence all your inner critics
With your conscience make amends,
And allow yourself some happiness
It's Christmas time again!
Call a truce with those who bother you
Let all the fighting cease,
Give your differences a breather
And declare a time of peace,
Don't let angry feelings taint
The precious time you have to spend,
And allow yourself some happiness
It's Christmas time again!
Like some cool refreshing water
Or a gentle summer breeze,
Like a fresh bouquet of flowers
Or the smell of autumn leaves,
It's a banquet for the spirit
Filled with family, food and friends,
So allow yourself some happiness
It's Christmas time again!

"The Road Not Taken"
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
--------------------------------------
Guys I thought this would be a good moment to look back and see whether you have missed any roads that was not taken by choice or intention....chose this poem as it talks about woods and my imagination flew to MCC campus......you are free to speak your mind...AM

H1N1
A bunch of students at YAK's college residence have got this now. At my workplace, we have lots of hand sanitzers, posters reminding people to stay home if they are sick, wash hands, etc. I am really worried because I deal a lot with public and they don't stay home. The other day a woman was visiting the library with her child who had just been diagnosed with chicken pox. She wanted to get some books for her child before going home to rest. Urgh....
Schools keep reminding children to stay safe too. Of course the media only reports bad situations and forgets many who have recovered from it. Still, all the hype is working and I am worried.

Ugh!$#@*&
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about England in the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to overcome the body odor. Hence the custom even today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, followed by grown up sons, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water..
Houses had thatched roofs (thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath). It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pets and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying .. It's raining cats and dogs.
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more and more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. To prevent it, a piece of wood was placed in the entrance way. Hence the term, a thresh hold.
(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)
In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat..
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the 'upper crust.'
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out fo r a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather a round and eat and drink and wait and see if 'presumed dead' would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.
England is an old and small place. The local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the in side and they realised they had been burying people alive . So they started tying a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, 'saved by the bell' or was considered a ...'dead ringer'..

Ba(r)d bloopers
In one of Shakespeare's famous plays, Hamlet rations out his situation by relieving himself in a long soliloquy. A soliloquy is a conversation between one person. Hamlet has an edible complex, and his mind is filled with the filth of incestuous sheets which he pours over every time he sees his mother. Oedipus and Hamlet really had a lot in common, even if Freud had not yet been invented.
In another play, Macbeth was from his mother's womb untamely ripped. He is a brave and strong man who turns bad and gradually gets worse. After Macbeth becomes the Thane of Candor, King Duncan wires Macbeth that he will be spending the night at his castle. Then Lady Macbeth tries to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan by attacking his manhood. All Macbeth does is follow his wife's odors. He kills the king on page 14. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth then suffer from quilt. In fact, they have so much quilt between them, they can't sleep at night.
During the banquet scene, Lady Macbeth is afraid her husband will expose himself in front of his guests. Then Lady Macbeth gets kilt. The proof that the witches in Macbeth were supernatural is that no one could eat what they cooked.
Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couplet. This story presents a one on one situation between a man and a woman. Romeo and Juliet belonged to the families of the Montages and Copulates, and Lady Copulate disliked Romeo.
Romeo saw Juliet for the first time at the massacred ball. They tell each other how much they are in love in the baloney scene. After much fighting in the pubic square, Romeo's last wish is to be laid by Juliet. When Juliet died, they had a funeral in her wedding dress.
In Julius Caesar, Brutus is a tragic hero despite dying at the end. In Julius Caesar, the toothslayer warned Caesar to beware the March of Dimes. He is murdered by the Ides of March because they think he is ego-testical. Dying, he gasps out the words "Eat you, Brutus!" Then he dies with these immortal words: "Veni, vedi, vici."
In The Merchant of Venice, the Rialto is the business part of Venus. Bassanio loved Portia, but he had no money to press his suit. Taming of the Screw is a play about Petruchio, who takes Kate from a bitter screw to an obedient wife. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck turns Bottom's head into an ass. The clown in As You Like It is named Touchdown. In that play, Shakespeare wrote, "All the world's a stage, and everyone is just acting."
In Anthony and Cleopatra, Cleopatra reclined to become Mark Anthony's mistress. She took the Roman Empire one man at a time. The barge she shat on, like a burnished throne, glowed on the water. The poop was beaten gold.
Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.Source: www.verbivore.com.

Asian writers in English
I liked all the little details about life in Pakistan which reminded me how similar it was to life in India - the power cuts, the exotic food, cross-border tensions etc. - and despite the tensions of a possible war in the wake of the Dec 13 attack on the Indian Parliament, one feels a sense of kinship with fellow inhabitants of the subcontinent and the continent.
Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner was another novel I loved. I understand the movie is out.
p.s. From a cbox message on my blog, I decided to clothe my views into a short, proper review. I hope it is not unwelcome.

Even when I saw him a few months back, he looked like a pakka politician - dressed in khadi white and driving a Scorpio, which is so popular with the Tamil political gentry.

Zooming past
A demonstration in support of LTTE chief Prabakaran in Chennai last week... They were actually more policemen than demonstrators as trouble was expected. Our office was a fortress too and we had the para military apart from the police guarding our premises. But nothing untoward happened. It did bring traffic to a standstill for almost an hour. (Not the best of pictures, since it was taken on my mobile quickly... I didnt want the police arresting me :)
Here in Chennai, things have been slightly more interesting than usual of late. Pre-election campaigns, election results, post-election wrangling for ministerial berths by the Chief Minister, 'death' of Tiger chief Prabakaran (though some still believe it is not him) and of course the IPL tournament. Though Chennai Super Kings didnt see the light of the final, we tried to be happy that another South Indian team won the trophy.
The zoozoos caught our imagination more than the cricketers. They lit up our otherwise mundane lives for a while.
And now the IPL is over, the katthri heat is supposedly over (but the sun still shines mercilessly on the city) and schools are about to reopen.

I am sure this is a good time for all those like Miller, Murali ,Rajeev,Sunitha, Annie, Grizalda,Prem, Venki and all those who had sir both in B.A and M.A. to come up with your experiences.
He was nice person so far as my experiences with sir is concerned, who suddenly would come up with teasing or comments. sometimes serious. Wonder what marks kids get now!
All those with B.A experience was a bit careful.. as they had both ends of the marks.
lucky us.. we got the higher end of marks! when we joined.Though we were scared as his range kept changing.
Any one else got anything new to say? where are you all.. hibernating... winter is over spring here!

From Grace
Hi Usha,
Lovely to hear from you. Yes, I'm in Melbourne, Australia. Been married for the past 13 years, and have two girls – Priya age 7, and Divya turning 4 in a couple of weeks. We moved to Australia about 5 years ago since both our families live here. Used to be in the US before that – in Bloomington, Indiana. Would you believe one of my cousins lives in Farmington Hills, and I've visited her a few times. How long have you been there?
I work at a university here doing HR and Finance related stuff. I've lost touch with all the MCC gang, and just recently got back in touch with Glady. Have you kept in touch with others? What news of them, and please send me more news and photos of you.
Keep in touch,
Grace

Money matters---- Life matters
The present world , see a lot of deaths some accidents ,Als,cancer, sudden- all of a sudden, kidney failures, heart attacks. .the list is endless. I know some of you have had the personal tragedy in your life and know of what i am speaking about...These are no more the old 70 and above age group.. they are getting younger and younger.. their kids 5 less or more- parents suffering with health issues, they not having work.
Even kids who are suffering 1 yr and above having convulsions, turning blue not breathing. Each day you hear/see a new suffering,i feel- how lucky we are , Those of us who does not have to worry about such things.Their parents cries still fresh. Don't know when our time will come.
Each day a person who goes to work here has no guarantee of them having work when they come back. Recently, 1 day back 7 of them from my husbands dept were told to pack and leave ,escorted by security, in few mins. so many other friends told us the same things.. so many we know not having job. Hope and pray that they get a Job and thank God for each day He takes us through-so many slips/spins in cars,so lucky many times.
Many of us have started cutting on food, gas, electricity, although its freezing cold. gets dark early..they increased Gas, electric bills almost 100$ -200$ more per month.
Many of them just quit their life, some trying different ways..
All of us are looking forward to hearing a good news and just pray. At this time you see, silly people ,insensitive and also some dummies walking from family and all the good things they have. Then i don't know how to react -sad for the rest, fight for the rest..
I am seeing all this in own family, friends circle and News its more, of course!.
When i hear many people talk about all this , i feel ,unhappy when a person who has both spouses working complain of not getting gifts for Christmas or something like that. When they do, i don't know what to say to them. Don't take it personally. If you do -think of someone you know ,who has a worse situation than you, in your own circle.
BE SENSITIVE TO OTHERS, KIND,LOVING ,UNDERSTANDING-If you know any one encourage them to speak.
( remember v's call-don't know if it helped make a difference for her) Wish we all could help. Now a Days we have no time for calling, writing or keeping in touch with anyone but the person you want to.
FRIENDS -I see ,and feel hurt for them all, that's why i talk and say the things i do. I say or write take care,God bless ,really thinking and praying and remembering the persons going to read it.Same wishes to each One of you ,my Friends and your family. GOD be with you all.hope to hear your achievements and Good news.. so wish u all that.I know bad also is there.
I really Feel happy and love it when you all post photo, message or comment. That's sometimes the things which bring some spice to our life. Or your chats, messages Forwarded also.

Our First Snow Ever
We got out of the first door of our building and then the second and saw the snow. It was a bit cold and we wanted to go back in. But alas! in all our excitement we had forgotten the keys. It was a condominium and you had to have your keys to get into the building and then into your apartment.
We stood there and thought about it and realized no one was going to go in or out of the building at this time (as it was a working day and it was around 10 a.m.). Our landlady worked a block away from our building at a grocery store. So my poor hubby went to the store in his flip-flops and pyjamas to get the keys from her. She had quite a laugh.
I am sure people watching him on the streets thought - Wierd immigrants!
