Back from Down Under

Murali was recently in Australia, visiting his brother who was getting an award from the government. I had requested him to do a piece for the blog on his trip and he had accepted the challenge. But before that, here are two pieces he has done for the newspaper.
This one is on Aborigines and came in the Sunday magazine of the newspaper.

This one on bush fires came in Young World, the kiddie newspaper from TH.

Junior director

Remember our junior in MCC? One Kamakshi Priya. She seems to be making it big in the film world. Is the director of the new Tamil blockbuster "Kannamoochu Ennaada", which stars Radhika, Sathyaraj and budding Malayali superstar Prithviraj.

It was only when she was being interviewed on one of the channels, that I realised it's her.

She was one of those who used to be in the poetry reading and drama sessions at Anderson Hall, alongwith classmate Rajni.

Murali

p.s. Thank you Murali for this very interesting info. I vaguely remember her. And Prithviraj has already budded in Malayalam, but he is prolly still budding in Tamil. :)

Obit Ms. Chelliah

"Just to tell you that Ms. Chelliah, the warden of Martin Hall, passed away a few days ago. Seems to have had a long innings at Sarah Tucker, Lady Doak, WCC, MCC. Notice came in The Hindu and was issued by a nephew, Joshua Chelliah.
Guess she was there when Shobha Paul was in Martin."
Murali

p.s. I dont think any of you will know her (save for Sunita) though I had the fortune to interact with her when I resided in MH for a couple of days. She had been extremely kind to me and had tried to dissuade me from leaving the hostel on account of ragging - ragging of a IInd PG student by other IInd PG students just because she was a novice at the hostel. I was told by a fellow first yr victim (the famous nightingale of the college Sindhu John) that my departure helped the cure the menace of ragging in MH to a considerable extent since it came to the Princi's attention.

Sindhu John, our junior, right now lives in Chennai with her handsome hubby Paul, who runs an NGO,and 2 daughters. She had married soon after her postgraduation and has quite big kids. She attends the church I used to attend for a while but I havent seen her in the past 2 years or more.

Murali's findings

The 4th batch from Mky, received around 1 pm:
Spoke to the hospital. Prof. B is in the third floor ICU. At 12.40 p.m, they said he had been shifted to the ICU after surgery. The duty nurse said he is comfortable and stable.
***
Contacted the hospital again at 5.10 p.m. The only attendant there was Prof. B's old student, an Israeli guy who we might have seen in Prof. B's house.
Tall and fair chap who was doing research in 1993-94.
The Israeli guy said that what the hospital meant by "stable" was that there was no fluctuation in the last 24 hours. But, according to him, Prof B. is not good and critical.
No one else seems to be in the hospital and the Israeli said that he has been there ever since Prof B. went into the ICU.
***
Just spoke to Prof. (Mrs) Bhatt at 5.35 p.m. and she has given me a totally different picture. Says that Prof B. had solids yesterday and that he will need time to regain strength.
Said Prof. Ganesh is in Bangalore and that she spoke to him yesterday, but she is not sure whether he has returned to Chennai since. Prof G. was at the hospital with Prof Bhatt... Mrs B said he will have the correct information.
Must add that the Israeli was a bit abrupt, but the ICU nurse was optimistic.

Pray for the Bhatts!

I got this mesage from Murali today:
"Prof Manohar Samuel has passed on a message: Prof. Bhatt is almost on his last legs - he has cancer (intestinal). Prof (Mrs) Bhatt has lost her vision. Not sure if its total. He also added that the children are settled.
Must fast forward plans to visit them."
***
A post-tea brainwave (4.16 p.m. IST) from Murali is reproduced below:
If this idea is alright with everyone ... was just thinking that we, as a class, could give them a surprise by calling them from wherever we are. Will try and coordinate getting the telephone number/s from Prof Manohar or Prof. Rajagopal and then work out when we could call.
It would perhaps help cheer them up.
***

The 3rd update from Mky:
Called the A&PRO, MCC. Apparently the English Dept still doesn't have a telephone that's worth using as there was a series of mysterious clicks, which eventually got me back to the A&PRO.
All I got was a curt reply: "Avaar retired. Details theriyaathu."
Tried again. This time someone else managed to get me Prof. Bhatt's home number. Prof (Mrs) B is at home and sounding extremely brave.
Prof B is in the ICU at the Bangalore Institute of Oncology, after surgery. Was in Apollo, Bangalore earlier. Is being looked after by his son and a few old students.
We could try and call there but he "is very feeble and weak." The staff could connect us to his room/ward. Mrs B said he would be happy to hear from us and a message could be passed on to him through the students who are taking turns waiting outside the room/ward.
Prof B's son is in IBM and has a daughter. Second daughter is in Citibank and the third in TCS and in Chennai.
Prof. (Mrs) B said he is critical but after gaining strength should be discharged. She will be leaving for Bangalore with the daughters on Sept. 06. Could make out that she was fighting back ... the tears.
Perhaps we could start calling them immediately.

on the web

Some investigative journalism from Murali and me yesterday bore results! Murali located Shanker Balan's blog and I sent him a mail today to confirm if it was really him. Well, it was! And Shanker has promised that "I will visit the class blog and keep in touch". You may read more about his whereabouts in his blog.
Some updates received from Mickey today:
Rekha Nambiar's mother has said that Vinothini was in Chennai 2 months ago on a 4-day trip. She had made a presentation and is to submit papers to the Eng Dept on pursuing a PhD. Vinodini is currently in Washington DC.
Correction in yesterday's post: HoD (Eng) is now Prof. Rajagopal.
"Ms. Ajie George, M.A." is currently listed (website) in the faculty of English at Stella Maris. She had not completed her MPhil, and seems to be the only soul in the dept with just an M.A. tagged to her name (she had passed the UGC exam even before she joined for Mphil).
Website of MCC: http://www.mcc.edu.in/
Half the links don't work as usual!! [says Murali].
The Principal of MCC is Prof (Dr.) V.J. Philip of the Chemistry department.
Loyola and MCC often ranks among the best colleges in Chennai in India Today's annual surveys... RMG
