O' Marina

On Sunday evening, we went to the Marina beach. It was looking pretty clean thanks to a cleaning operation that morning by school kids. But still there were plastic covers and leftovers of food stuff littered here and there. Mind you, that was at 4 p.m. when the crowd was only trickling in. You can imagine the mess by 9 p.m.
A dozen ships lined the horizon, sailing off from the harbour. (Just click on the first two pics and you will get the magnified view.)
The Chennai Corporation is planning to beautify the Marina, one of the longest beaches of the world. I hope there will be a bit of beach sand left after all this. As it is, with the MGR and other samadhis the beach has lost precious ground.
The sea was calm that day. After the din and commotion of the Vinayaka idol immersions. (I guess that explains the floral garlands on the shore.) A couple of guys asked us as we parked our car if we had come to immerse idols, and if so, they'd do it for us (for a price, I guess).

Merry-go-rounds and flying horses offered a ride for Rs. 5 a person. The kids loved it.

p.s. I hope this helps my NRI friends to relive old times in Chennai... I respect Usha's sentiments about not wanting to be reminded about dirty old Chennai :)

Hi Rosh,

It makes me home sick. Considering it is one of the longest beaches in the world, I hope someone does something to clean it up. People should also have a personal responsibility and learn to throw garbage in the bins provided (???)

Nice pictures...

Dirty Indian fellas, eh?
But I earnestly hope that the day will come when India is spick and span everywhere, not just in pockets of prosperity.
p.s. and there are not enuf bins. i sometimes walk carrying some waste stuff looking for a bin.
interstingly, i see a huge brand new bin that has come from bangkok, at my bus stop.

hi rosh, its not for reminding.. as much its sad how none of us take care of it.. and even if a few try to the others there to destroy their attempts..
like for example if u had garbage bins... there will be fellows who walk off with it.(throwing around it-not in it.!)
public toilets same ..they don't like to leave it clean for others..
stuff like that..
its not just there.. u can see our indians doing the same here.. so lazy even to flush a toilet after themselves..when water everything is free.. they drop stuff don't clean up..even in church.. very Sad!!!!!
take care. ust.

I understand. Our people need to develop a sense of social responsibility - to keep public places clean, not to destroy public utilities etc.
Somebody said it was the British rule that made Indians so irresponsible about sanitation - when they thought it wasnt their country and didnt care how it was kept.
I hope as we become more educated and aware, we will learn to treat public places with more respect.
